The holidays are fast approaching: Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas, and Kwanza. All are wonderful times of the year when we get together with family and friends to celebrate the rituals of the holiday. More often than not, the joy of your holiday rituals is dampened. Why? Because our lives are so full of work, our children’s schedules, and family commitments plus the innate desire to make the holiday event the best it can be for everyone. Time for holiday planning and preparations is squeezed into little segments of time here and there, the party schedule for your kids and family is over the top, and gift buying becomes a frenzy to get it done on time. Does this sound familiar?
Why not decide right now to make the holidays look different this year for you and your family? It is possible but will take a bit of mindful intention and some strategies to help you relax into the holidays.
The Mayo Clinic suggests that you “Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Plan your menus and make your shopping list.” Take a look at your calendar and write in these activities so they are given priority just as taking your son to basketball practice or a scheduled doctor’s appointment. Shopping specifically for your holiday meal on a specific day will keep you focused on what you need for the event. There will be less chance of buying extras. By putting shopping and baking days on the calendar, you are less likely to feel ambushed by a holiday event with little time to prepare.
The matter of visiting friends and other holiday activities, namely parties, can grow and grow so much so that you don’t enjoy the events because there are too many. You are rushed from one to another. What do you do? Decide ahead how many events you can happily attend depending upon other ‘have to’ commitments. Be ready to say,”No,” if your schedule is looking too full.
At the Relax Your Way Through the Holidays workshop at YCD Holistic Healing on Wednesday, November 12th from 6:30 -8:30 p.m., you’ll Learn ways to relax and energize yourself so that you can more easily and fully enjoy holiday planning and events. They will become the pleasurable events they are meant to be!
